Meet Steve Hicks, MD, PhD

Dr. Steve Hicks is on the Clinical Advisory Board and the Chief Medical Officer of As You Are, and an Associate Professor of Academic General Pediatrics at Pennsylvania State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. In addition to his work at As You Are and Penn State, he is a physician scientist who has served the Central Pennsylvania community as a general pediatrician since 2015, performing well-child check-ups, sick visits, and developmental evaluations. His clinical focus is on the early, and accurate diagnosis of autism. Dr. Hicks’ interest in autism stems from his PhD training in neurogenetics. As a physician scientist, he studies the influence of genetics and the environment on pediatric diseases involving growth and neurodevelopment.

Dr. Hicks has also been awarded the Outstanding Early Faculty Career Development Award from the National Association for Clinical and Translational Science, and the Distinguished Early Stage Investigator Award from the Penn State College of Medicine. Dr. Hicks has published over 50 articles in peer reviewed journals, including JAMA Pediatrics and Clinical and Translational Medicine.

He completed his undergraduate degree from Marist College and completed his MD, PhD and residency at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University.

 

What is your connection to our mission?

As a general pediatrician, I understand the importance of providing early, accurate developmental assessments in order to provide children and families with the support they need for a healthy future.

Why do you love helping children?

I am the son of two teachers who taught me that caring for future generations is one of the most important things one can do with their career.

I have an incredible wife, Christine, and three wonderful children: Cecilia (8), Theo (3), and Calvin (2); and a golden retriever (Miles)
